Ciena Corporation (NYSE: CIEN) announced fiscal 2029 targets at its Investor Forum in Ottawa on September 16, 2026, projecting a revenue compound annual growth rate of roughly 30% and an adjusted gross margin of approximately 50%. These long-range figures followed third-quarter fiscal 2026 results reported on September 3, where revenue rose 37% year-over-year to $1.67 billion and adjusted earnings per share more than tripled to $2.11.
The September 4 post-earnings reaction was mixed as analysts weighed the immediate beat against supply constraints. TD Cowen cut its price target sharply to $400 from $575 while keeping a Buy rating, describing the guidance as "seemingly disappointing to bulls." B. Riley lowered its target to $347 from $413 and maintained a Neutral stance, citing multiple compression across AI-related optical stocks. Morgan Stanley also reduced its target to $425 from $490, identifying supply as a "key constraint." Conversely, Citi viewed the selloff as a buying opportunity, maintaining a Buy rating and a $658 price target, while JPMorgan kept an Overweight rating but trimmed its target from $635 to $605.
Following the Investor Forum, several firms revised their outlooks upward. Northland raised its target to $550 from $500, noting the 2029 targets point to earnings power of $25 or more per share. Barclays increased its target to $548 from $475, staying Overweight. Rosenblatt reiterated a Buy rating with a $525 target, calling the fiscal 2029 framework "promising." Morgan Stanley modestly raised its target to $450 on September 17, though it continued to await further evidence on gross margin progression.
Operational metrics support the long-term optimism. Backlog grew by $800 million in the quarter to $8.5 billion, with management now projecting more than $10 billion by year-end. Optical networking revenue rose 46% to $1.19 billion, and cloud provider revenue grew more than 80%. Bookings in the first month of the fourth quarter nearly matched all third-quarter orders.
However, costs associated with securing long-term component agreements through 2029 are expected to reduce cash from operations in the fourth quarter. Two customers accounted for 41.7% of revenue, and approximately 70 basis points of the 46.4% adjusted gross margin came from a one-time tariff refund that will not repeat.
Institutional positioning reflects divergent views. Arrowstreet Capital increased its stake by 21% to 1.68 million shares, while AQR Capital Management added 8% to reach 1.05 million shares. Jericho Capital Asset Management cut its position by 67% to 561,513 shares. Overall hedge fund ownership rose to 81 funds from 73 in the prior quarter.
As of September 18, 2026, short interest sat at 2.3% of float, and shares traded at 39.37 times forward earnings. The central question for investors remains whether gross margin will climb toward the 50% target as Hyper-Rail and new interconnect products ramp, or if supply constraints will continue to limit the pace of expansion.
