A regional broadsheet that respects the heat
NewsMV reports the Maldives, Sri Lanka and the wider Indian Ocean with the care of a national paper and the reach of a regional one. Clear, unhurried, and accountable — the way the islands deserve to be told.
Work with our newsroom →
We started with a simple frustration: the region was being reported on, but rarely reported from.
When NewsMV began in a single Malé office in 2014, the biggest stories of the Indian Ocean — rising seas, shifting fisheries, the quiet diplomacy between small states — were being told from capitals thousands of miles away. We thought they deserved a desk that could see the water from the window.
A decade on, that desk has grown into bureaus from Colombo to Bangkok, a broadcast studio, and a newsroom that publishes in Dhivehi and English. What hasn't changed is the instinct: get close, stay independent, and explain the ocean to the people who live by it.
How we work
Reported on the water
We cover the ocean from the ocean — on dhonis, at council meetings, on the reef. Distance dulls a story; we keep ours close.
Independent by design
No resort owner, party or patron sets our agenda. Our only obligation is to the reader who trusts us to get it right.
Regional, not parochial
A storm off Colombo is news in Malé. We report the Indian Ocean as the single, connected place it has always been.
The desk that signs off every front page
A small newsroom by design. Every story carries a byline and a desk; every correction carries a name.
Sets the front page; reports the capital when the story warrants it.
Runs the desk that anchors the masthead — reefs, fisheries, sea level.
Tourism, trade and the household ledgers behind the headline numbers.
Diplomacy, security and South Asia coverage from the Sri Lanka desk.
Parliament, councils and the long arc of Maldivian public life.
Reader complaints, source review and the corrections column.
Reach the relevant desk through one inbox — we read everything, even the angry ones.
