South Carolina suspends top draft prospect Dylan Stewart indefinitely after ejection

South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer announced an indefinite suspension for edge rusher Dylan Stewart on Sunday, following the player's ejection during a 49-14 loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday. Stewart was removed from the game after punching tight end Josh Ford's helmet and subsequently arguing with coaches on the sideline. Beamer stated that Stewart will not play in the upcoming Saturday game against Kentucky, though he indicated a final decision on the player's future beyond the current week is pending further meetings.

The suspension comes at a critical juncture for Stewart, who is widely projected as a top-10 pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. The incident is expected to generate significant uncertainty regarding his draft status. Beamer emphasized that the punishment extends beyond the physical altercation, citing a breach of program standards and accountability. "It's beyond the punch. The punch is unacceptable," Beamer said, adding that while throwing punches is not unprecedented in football, the subsequent behavior violated the team's core values.

Stewart emerged as a standout performer during his freshman season in 2024, recording 6.5 sacks and 23 total tackles. His production continued in 2025, where he posted 4.5 sacks and 33 total tackles. His performance earned him a second-team All-SEC selection by coaches and an honorable mention All-American nod from college football expert Phil Steele.

The loss to Alabama drops South Carolina to a 2-2 record. The Gamecocks are scheduled to face Kentucky this coming Saturday. It remains unclear when or if Stewart will return to the field for the remainder of the season.
