Wintrust Financial Corporation (Nasdaq: WTFC) reported record net income of $700.1 million for the first nine months of 2026, a 17% increase from the same period in 2025. The Illinois-based lender posted $9.89 in diluted earnings per share for the nine-month period, compared to $8.25 a year earlier. Timothy S. Crane, the company's President and Chief Executive Officer, stated that the third quarter produced the seventh consecutive quarter of record net income.
For the third quarter alone, Wintrust recorded net income of $239.1 million, or $3.37 per diluted common share, up from $233.7 million, or $3.30 per share, in the second quarter of 2026. Pre-tax, pre-provision income, a non-GAAP measure, reached a record $1.0 billion for the first nine months of 2026, exceeding the $884.1 million reported for the same period in 2025. In the third quarter, this metric stood at $352.2 million, compared to $341.1 million in the prior quarter.
Balance sheet growth remained a primary driver of performance during the quarter. Total loans increased by $1.1 billion, an 8% annualized gain, while total deposits rose by $1.3 billion, also an 8% annualized increase. Total assets grew by $1.3 billion, or 7% annualized, during the period. Crane noted that net interest income for the quarter reached $621.6 million, an increase of $24.2 million from the second quarter of 2026. This growth was driven by strong average earning asset growth of $2.1 billion.
The net interest margin for the third quarter was 3.49%, or 3.51% on a fully taxable-equivalent non-GAAP basis. Crane indicated that this margin remained in line with expectations and that the balance sheet is positioned to support stable performance through changing interest rate environments. Funding costs on interest-bearing deposits decreased by one basis point compared to the second quarter, while loan yields decreased by one basis point.
Asset quality metrics showed mixed signals regarding credit risk. Net charge-offs totaled $21.0 million in the third quarter of 2026, up from $13.4 million in the second quarter. This represented 15 basis points of average total loans on an annualized basis, compared to 10 basis points in the prior quarter. The provision for credit losses was $25.9 million in the third quarter, an increase from $23.1 million in the second quarter.
Non-performing loans totaled $176.9 million as of September 30, 2026, comprising 0.31% of total loans. This was a decrease from $179.3 million and 0.32% of total loans at June 30, 2026. The allowance for credit losses stood at $486.1 million at the end of the third quarter, up from $481.2 million at the end of the second quarter.
Crane highlighted recent deposit market share gains in Illinois and expressed commitment to expanding presence in Wisconsin and west Michigan. He stated that management remains focused on delivering consistent balance sheet growth and expanding net interest income while maintaining disciplined expense management to generate positive operating leverage for the year.
