Western Alliance Bancorporation reported third-quarter 2026 net income of $277.2 million and diluted earnings per share of $2.45, figures that reflect a 6.4% increase in pre-provision net revenue compared to the prior year. The Phoenix-based bank attributed its results to enhanced profitability, lower deposit costs, and improved asset quality metrics.

Kenneth A. Vecchione, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, stated that the quarter featured accelerated share repurchase activity and strong execution. The company repurchased $92.1 million in shares during the period, equivalent to 1.15 million shares at an average price of $79.78 per share.

Pre-provision net revenue reached $419.1 million, up $25.3 million or 6.4% from the third quarter of 2025. Net interest income totaled $807.6 million, an increase of $57.2 million or 7.6% year-over-year. This growth was primarily driven by a $5.5 billion increase in average interest-earning asset balances and lower rates on interest-bearing liabilities, which offset declining yields on interest-earning assets.

Deposit optimization actions totaling $4.5 billion over the past two quarters contributed to a $14 million, or 8%, quarterly decline in ECR-related deposit costs. Strong commercial banking deposit growth offset this optimization activity, keeping total deposits stable at $81.8 billion. The net interest margin expanded 4 basis points quarter-over-quarter to 3.57%, while the efficiency ratio stood at 58.1%.

Asset quality metrics showed notable improvement during the quarter. Nonaccrual loans declined by $77 million, or approximately 14%, to 0.79% of funded held-for-investment loans. The allowance for credit losses coverage of funded held-for-investment loans increased by 4 basis points to 0.93%. Coverage of nonaccrual loans rose from 96% to 118%. Annualized net loan charge-offs declined 7 basis points quarterly to 0.30%, which is the midpoint of the company's 2026 guidance range.

The provision for credit losses was $80.0 million in the third quarter of 2026, compared with $80.4 million in the second quarter of 2026 and $80.0 million in the third quarter of 2025. The company attributed this provision to net charge-offs of $45.8 million, loan growth, and preparatory allocations for economic risks tied to the elevated interest rate environment.

Key performance indicators included a return on average assets of 1.12% and a return on average tangible common equity of 15.5%, both of which increased for the second consecutive quarter. The tangible common equity ratio decreased to 6.9% from 7.0% in the prior quarter, while the CET1 ratio stood at 10.9%. Tangible book value per share, net of tax, was $62.22, down 1.6% from the prior quarter but up 6.3% year-over-year.
