Space Exploration Technologies closed at $159.31, up 7.79%, on Wednesday following a third-quarter earnings report that exceeded market expectations. The stock, which trades under the ticker SPCX, saw trading volume reach 217.4M shares, a figure approximately 123% above its three-month average of 97.3M shares. This surge comes after the company’s 2026 initial public offering, during which the stock has declined by 1% since going public.

The company reported third-quarter revenue of $14.6 billion, a 161% year-over-year increase. CEO Elon Musk attributed much of this growth to AI-related revenue, a segment he describes as "super intelligence," which saw revenue rise by 830% annually. As a result, Space Exploration Technologies turned profitable, posting a quarterly net income of $4.4 billion. This stands in sharp contrast to the year-ago quarter, when the company reported a loss of nearly $1.1 billion.

Investor attention has shifted to the company's future revenue projections, which present a significant gap between executive statements. Musk forecasted that annual revenue could reach between $500 billion and $1 trillion in 2027. In contrast, CFO Bret Johnsen offered a more conservative outlook, projecting quarterly revenue of $33 billion to $37 billion for the first quarter of 2027. Historical performance suggests Musk’s shorter-term projections have not always materialized, yet his long-term targets continue to shape investor sentiment regarding the company's ambitions.

Musk also reiterated hints about a potential merger with Tesla, a development investors may view as logical given that Tesla's Roadster utilized SpaceX technology to achieve flight. Despite the recent stock surge, the company's price-to-sales ratio has decreased to 68 due to rising revenues. The current market multiple reflects the pace of recent growth and the scale of the company's stated long-term goals.

Broader market conditions supported the rally, with the S&P 500 rising 0.59% to 7,757 and the Nasdaq Composite climbing 1.05% to 26,703. In the aerospace and defense sector, Rocket Lab closed at $53.67, up 5.44%, while AST SpaceMobile ended at $40.90, down 0.56%, as investors monitored momentum in launch and satellite communications.
