Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is reportedly being sidelined for the remainder of the NFL season following a diagnosis of multiple blood clots in his lungs. NFL Network's Ian Rapaport reported that the necessary treatment process will take at least three months, a timeline that effectively ends the 28-year-old's year. This development confirms the severity of the condition initially identified before the Eagles' October 11 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.

The Eagles and Hurts' agent, Nicole Lynn, issued a joint statement detailing the medical progression. While Hurts was first diagnosed by specialists in London with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis, further testing and monitoring led to a current diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli. The statement clarified that bilateral pulmonary emboli involve multiple blood clots in the lungs. Despite the serious nature of the diagnosis, the team noted that Hurts is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations.

The medical team indicated that Hurts' treatment will involve anticoagulation, commonly known as blood thinners. During this period, he is prohibited from participating in any contact activities, including football. The joint statement expressed that his prognosis is very good and anticipated a full recovery, with the expectation that he will be able to resume contact football activities once he is off the medication. The team also noted an anticipation that he will have no long-term effects.

Although the official statement did not explicitly state that Hurts would miss the remainder of the season, NFL insider Adam Schefter and other reporters have reported that he is done for the year. The initial discovery of a blood clot in Hurts' leg occurred before the Eagles traveled to London for their game against the Jaguars. NFL reporter Tom Pelissero noted that this initial clot was superficial, and doctors advised Hurts not to sleep after its discovery. Despite being awake for roughly 36 straight hours, Hurts started the game against Jacksonville, which ended in a 19-17 loss for Philadelphia.

Hurts practiced with the Eagles during the following week, but a follow-up ultrasound revealed movement in the small blood clot. This finding ruled him out for the Eagles' subsequent road loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. The medical team's assessment remains that Hurts will make a full recovery from the deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli.
