Washington Commanders coach Dan Quinn announced on Tuesday that star wide receiver Terry McLaurin will miss the remainder of the season with a torn left patellar tendon. The 31-year-old Pro Bowler is scheduled to undergo surgery to repair the injury, a loss that significantly impacts the team's offensive depth during a difficult stretch of the schedule.
McLaurin sustained the injury on a first-quarter route during Monday night's 23-17 defeat by the San Francisco 49ers. He left the field on a cart, his left leg secured in an air cast. Speaking to reporters, Quinn noted that McLaurin contributes significantly both on and off the field. "For him to even start the game like he did was significant," Quinn said, highlighting the player's contribution from training camp through the regular season.
This is McLaurin's eighth year with the Commanders, and he has spent his entire career with the franchise. In the five games played this season prior to the injury, he recorded 15 catches for 230 yards and one touchdown. His career totals stand at 513 catches, 7,191 yards and 42 touchdowns. Ahead of the 2025 season, McLaurin agreed to a three-year contract extension worth $96 million after a holdout, a deal that runs through the 2028 season.
The injury introduces financial and contractual complexities for the team. McLaurin is owed $23.3 million next season, which includes a $5.35 million injury guarantee if he is not healthy by April 1. This provision could potentially influence his future with Washington. With McLaurin sidelined, the Commanders may shift more targets to Stefon Diggs, rookie wide receiver Antonio Williams and tight end Chig Okonkwo. Quarterback Jayden Daniels will lead the offense in his absence.
The Commanders currently hold a 1-4-1 record and sit in last place in the NFC East. The team has a bye week in Week 7, providing a break before their next matchup.
