Heartland Express, Inc. (Nasdaq: HTLD) reported net income of $1.0 million for the three months ended September 30, 2026, marking a return to profitability after a net loss in the same period of the prior year. The company, based in North Liberty, Iowa, stated that this financial shift was driven by stronger freight volumes and improved customer pricing resulting from ongoing industry capacity reductions.

For the quarter, operating revenue stood at $179.5 million, down from $196.5 million in the third quarter of 2025. The improvement in the bottom line was reflected in a basic earnings per share of $0.01, compared to a basic loss per share of $(0.11) a year earlier. The operating ratio improved by 500 basis points to 98.7%, while the non-GAAP adjusted operating ratio was 97.6%. In the same period last year, the operating ratio was 103.7% and the non-GAAP adjusted operating ratio was 103.5%.

Over the nine months ended September 30, 2026, Heartland Express generated operating revenue of $539.9 million and net income of $6.7 million. Basic earnings per share for the nine-month period were $0.09, up from a basic loss per share of $(0.42). The company’s operating ratio for the nine-month period was 97.1%, with a non-GAAP adjusted operating ratio of 95.7%.

Chief Executive Officer Mike Gerdin noted that while current results reflect positive momentum, the full impact of ongoing contract negotiations is not expected to be reflected in operating results until 2027. He cited rising fuel costs and inflationary impacts on maintenance and employee-related costs as significant drivers of operating expenses during the quarter. Gerdin stated that the company expects to rely on positive cash flows from operations to invest in its fleet of tractors and trailers for the remainder of the year.

The company continues to reduce its balance sheet leverage, with acquisition-related debt and finance lease obligations falling from $494.1 million in 2022 to $99.9 million as of September 30, 2026. The debt and equipment leases associated with the Smith Transport acquisition were fully retired in the first three months of 2026. Heartland Express reported total assets of $1.1 billion and stockholders' equity of $754.1 million at quarter-end. Cash balances increased by $30.0 million since December 31, 2025, to reach $48.5 million.

During the nine-month period, the company used $59.9 million to repay debt and finance lease obligations and $4.6 million for dividends and share repurchases. Net cash flows from operations were $55.1 million, or 10.2% of operating revenue. The company declared a regular dividend of $0.02 per share in the third quarter, paid on October 7, 2026, bringing cumulative cash dividends to $566.1 million over ninety-three consecutive quarters since 2003.
