CoreWeave (CRWV) shares have fallen 27.5% from last Friday's close to this Thursday morning's 52-week lows, only to rebound 17% before dropping another 5% in the current session. This volatility follows months of credit market warnings that equity holders largely ignored, leaving investors dazed by the rapid shifts in sentiment.

The underlying risk was not hidden. The AI cloud infrastructure platform, which did not exist five years ago, has accumulated $51.6 billion in debt, or approximately $46 billion net of cash, without a history of profitability. Tensions escalated after the CEO stated the company aspires to be investment grade to borrow "unlimited sums." This comment spooked investors who already anticipated nearly another $60 billion in debt over the next 18 months, especially since debt issued in June had already fallen 20% in value.

Options traders found the market pricing difficult to reconcile. Despite deteriorating credit and rising leverage, options premia remained low; as recently as last week, they were in the 6th percentile, or 1.5 standard deviations below the one-year mean. While options were not cheap in absolute terms at 72%, they were considered low given the prevailing risks. The stock had also appeared complacent, chopping around historical support levels dating back to May 2025.

The leverage structure amplifies these moves. Because CRWV is levered by more than 2:1, a 10% move in enterprise value translates to a nearly 22% swing in equity value. This mechanic drove the fierce division in sentiment this week. HSBC maintains a Sell rating with a $39 price target, suggesting the stock could be cut in half. Conversely, BNP and Cantor Fitzgerald argue the fears are overblown and the stock should more than double.

High-profile figures have stepped in to defend the equity. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang downplayed systemic concerns, while ARK Investment purchased 192,000 shares. BofA contends that scaling active power capacity and increased pricing from Nvidia's Vera Rubin rollout will accelerate revenue growth. The bank views execution risk as more significant than financing issues, a perspective that may not align with holders of the 2032 8 1/2s bought at par.

With CRWV's credit heavily distressed but its equity defended by dip-buyers, the stock remains primed for explosive volatility ahead of earnings in a few weeks. The current short interest stands at 15.4%. For those avoiding directional risk, a November/January Call Diagonal is trading for just under $6 per spread, representing almost 9% of the current stock price.
