President Donald Trump told reporters that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has great potential as a mayor, a remark that has unsettled Republican operatives six weeks before the midterm elections. The praise came after the two leaders met Monday at Gracie Mansion in New York City to discuss cost of living and housing issues, marking their third meeting since Mamdani won election last year as the first socialist and first Muslim mayor of the nation's most populous city.
The encounter contrasts sharply with Trump's recent rhetoric, where he warned of a communist takeover of the Democratic Party. At the GOP's first-ever midterm convention in Dallas less than two weeks ago, Trump told Republicans that the Democrat establishment had been overthrown by radicals who call themselves Democrat socialists but are actually communists. Now, with midterms approaching, some Republican strategists argue that Trump's warm reception of Mamdani undermines the party's central campaign argument against the left.
A GOP strategist who asked to remain anonymous to speak freely told Fox News Digital that the meeting is self-inflicted and off-message, stating that it does not help candidates in tight races. Another Republican consultant described the president as being in a fully self-indulgent period that seems disconnected from the goal of winning. A third GOP strategist noted that Trump appears to be stepping on the message by praising socialists after warning voters about them.
The reaction from the right has been immediate and vocal. Right-wing activist Laura Loomer, who holds an influential unofficial role as a Trump confidant, took to social media to express her demoralization. Loomer described Mamdani as a full-blown communist and argued that rewarding him contradicts the directive to fight communism, claiming that the base is angry. In response, longtime Trump aide Alex Bruesewitz, now a leading outside adviser to the president, defended the interaction on X, writing that having friendly relationships with people you disagree with is healthy and good.
Not all Republican consultants share this concern. Veteran GOP consultant Dave Carney told Fox News Digital that he does not think the meeting is a big deal, arguing that it aligns with the president's role in working with local governments rather than a political one. Carney pointed out that other left-wing Democrats advocating radical positions are not yet elected. Longtime Republican strategist Ryan Williams agreed that while the praise might anger some on the right, he does not believe it has significant political implications, adding that Trump appreciates political talent.
Republicans face traditional headwinds as the party in power, including persistent inflation, surging fuel prices, an unpopular war with Iran, and low approval ratings for Trump. The party's playbook aims to frame the midterms as a choice between moderate Republicans and far-left radicals. Fox News reached out to the White House for comment but did not receive a response at the time of publication.
