Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz's viral broadside against President Donald Trump over the troubled Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool drew immediate blowback from critics who pointed to the sweeping fraud scandal that unfolded under Walz's watch in Minnesota. Walz's Friday post on X, which accused the Trump administration of finding an imaginary problem, hiring connected insiders who grifted millions, and then claiming success, accumulated more than 3.5 million views — and an avalanche of pointed responses.

The Post That Sparked the Backlash

Walz framed his criticism around the Reflecting Pool controversy, which has become a Democratic talking point after a $14.8 million restoration project left the historic Washington, D.C., landmark near the Lincoln Memorial showing peeling paint and algae growth within weeks of completion. Without naming the Reflecting Pool directly, Walz described the episode as a metaphor for the entire Trump presidency — a move his supporters applauded but his critics called deeply ill-timed.

The counterattack came quickly. Fox Business senior correspondent Charles Gasparino pointed to what critics have called "Learing Centers," a reference to the Minnesota fraud scandal. Journalist Mark Hemingway questioned how Walz could accuse anyone of enabling grift. Minnesota Staff Fraud Reporting Commentary, an account representing more than 480 Minnesota state employees who have raised alarms about fraud in the state, posted a pointed response suggesting Walz lacked standing to make the charge. Sal Nuzzo, executive director of Consumers Defense, offered the session's sharpest summary: "Ya might want to sit this one out."

Cross-Party Pile-On

The backlash extended across conservative media and Republican officials. Republican Rep. Derrick Van Orden of Wisconsin invoked questions about Walz's recollections of his military service during his 2024 vice-presidential campaign, responding with a reference to an "imaginary war record." Conservative influencer Gunther Eagleman labeled Walz "the biggest fraudster in Minnesota." Former Trump White House spokesman Harrison Fields described the problems Walz dismissed as imaginary — including inflation, border crossings, fentanyl deaths, and energy policy — as conditions voters "lived," and noted that Walz is a "retiring governor and failed VP nominee." Fox News Digital sought comment from Walz's office.

Trump Responds on Truth Social

President Trump addressed the Reflecting Pool situation separately on Truth Social on Monday, alleging deliberate vandalism rather than maintenance failure. Trump described a roughly 300-foot gash, illegal chemicals placed in the water, and "86 47" carved chemically into the surrounding grass, which he attributed — without evidence beyond speculation — to inspiration from what he called "Dirty Cop, James Comey." Trump cited a 10-year federal prison sentence for destruction of national monuments and said enforcement would be pursued. The administration has maintained that the damage was the result of vandalism and that cleanup is underway.

Walz's office had not issued a public statement in response to the backlash as of the time of publication.
