The documentary Super Scam Me, produced by National Geographic, premieres Saturday at 9 pm ET and will be available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu. The film follows investigative journalist Mariana van Zeller as she investigates the mechanics of romance fraud. Van Zeller works with ethical hacker Arman the Cyber to expose a scammer posing as Jon Bon Jovi. The pair uses a fake bitcoin receipt to bait the impersonator, providing closure to a victim who had been drained of funds. The documentary explores how the boundary between a romantic partner and a fraud victim becomes blurred in these schemes. The Federal Trade Commission reports that romance scams cost Americans nearly $1.5 billion in losses each year. A clip from the film is exclusively debuting via Ars Technica.
