StockStory advises investors to avoid Fortune Brands (FBIN), citing deteriorating financial metrics that suggest the company is struggling to maintain profitability and growth. The research firm recommends a pivot to a digital advertising platform benefiting from the creator economy instead of holding the home construction materials maker. Fortune Brands shares have lagged the broader market over the past six months, posting a 1.6% loss to sit at $40.70, while the S&P 500 gained 7.7% during the same period.

The primary concern for StockStory analysts is the stagnation of Fortune Brands' core business. Over the last two years, the company failed to grow its organic revenue, a metric that excludes one-time events like mergers, acquisitions, and foreign currency fluctuations. This lack of organic growth implies that Fortune Brands may need to rely on acquisitions to accelerate expansion, a strategy StockStory views as expensive and risky due to potential integration disruptions.

Profitability trends have also declined sharply. Fortune Brands' operating margin, which measures the money retained after procuring, manufacturing, marketing, and researching products, decreased by 9 percentage points over the last five years. The operating margin for the trailing 12 months stood at 6.8%. Although StockStory notes that historical margins were healthy, the downward trend indicates a need for improved future profitability.

Further evidence of distress is visible in earnings and revenue trends. Over the past five years, Fortune Brands' earnings per share (EPS) declined by 6.5% annually, while revenue fell by 9% annually. StockStory generally steers readers away from companies with falling revenue and EPS, as diminishing earnings can signal changing secular trends or consumer preferences. The firm warns that this trajectory could leave the stock susceptible to large downswings if market conditions shift unexpectedly.

Despite these headwinds, Fortune Brands trades at $40.70 per share. StockStory argues that other companies currently offer superior fundamentals. The firm concludes that while it supports businesses that improve customers' lives, it will "cheer from the sidelines" for Fortune Brands, preferring to allocate capital to a top digital advertising platform riding the creator economy.
