Plex has launched a partnership with Fandango to drive movie theater ticket sales from its streaming platform. The move allows Plex users in the US to purchase tickets directly through Fandango when viewing title pages for films currently in theaters. This integration represents an expansion of Plex's business beyond its core media server software, aiming to monetize its content-discovery features.
The collaboration provides a direct path for audiences searching for streaming content to transition into theatrical viewers. When a user encounters a movie playing in theaters, a Fandango ticketing option appears, enabling them to find showtimes and complete the purchase. Fandango, which has operated since 2000, stated that it sells tickets for 31,000 movie theater screens in the US. By integrating with Plex, Fandango gains access to data from the streaming service, including ratings and cross-platform viewing habits, to better understand audience intent.
Plex claims its users make more than 100 million streaming decisions each month. The company is using this data volume to refine its advertising and discovery tools. The deal also incorporates attribution technology from Kochava, which the announcement says gives studios and advertisers greater visibility into how campaigns translate into ticket sales. This setup allows marketers to track engagement from initial discovery through to the final purchase.
