Lane Kiffin's return to Oxford fits a long history of coaches who made unwelcome trips back to former homes

Lane Kiffin walks into Vaught Hemingway Stadium this weekend as LSU's head coach, following his departure from Ole Miss for Baton Rouge, and Oxford has already arranged mounted police and extra security patrols for the occasion. The game carries the weight of a departure the locals have not forgiven. Kiffin has been here before.

The pattern runs back at least to 2008. Nick Saban left LSU following back-to-back SEC Championships and a national title, spent two seasons with the Miami Dolphins, and returned to the college ranks at Alabama in 2007. One year into that tenure, the top-ranked Crimson Tide traveled to Death Valley. Alabama escaped with a 27-21 overtime win that knocked LSU from the SEC Championship race, and Saban needed a police escort out of the stadium. He would later call leaving LSU the biggest mistake of his career.

Steve Spurrier's return to The Swamp carried a different temperature but its own weight. Spurrier won a Heisman Trophy quarterbacking Florida in 1966, returned as head coach in 1990, collected six SEC Championships and a national title, then left for a coaching gig with the Washington Redskins in 2002. He came back to the SEC in 2005 as South Carolina's head coach and beat Florida in his first year. When the Gamecocks visited Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in 2006, with Florida carrying national championship implications into the game, defensive end Jarvis Moss blocked a potential game-winning field goal to preserve a 17-16 win and keep the Gators' BCS title hopes alive. Spurrier had once said "only Gators get out alive" when referring to The Swamp. The phrase came back on that November afternoon.

Kiffin ran this same play at Tennessee in 2021. He had spent one season in Knoxville, gone 7-6, and left under cover of darkness for USC, and Tennessee had a decade to process the exit before Ole Miss appeared on the schedule. The two teams combined for nearly 1,000 yards. Tennessee had the ball trailing by five with a minute left in the fourth quarter when a controversial replay review halted play for nearly 20 minutes. Vols fans threw mustard bottles and golf balls onto the field, one of which allegedly struck Kiffin. He presented the golf ball on camera during his post-game ESPN interview.

Bobby Petrino's return to Frank Broyles Field in Fayetteville arrived by a stranger route. He had led Arkansas to a Sugar Bowl berth in 2010 and a top-five finish in 2011 before being fired in 2012 after crashing his motorcycle with a former Arkansas volleyball player on the back, an incident that triggered an investigation. A decade later he came back as head coach of Missouri State, an FCS school, while Arkansas was ranked in the top 10. The Razorbacks needed 21 unanswered fourth-quarter points to win 38-27. Petrino ended up as Sam Pittman's offensive coordinator the following year, and when Pittman was fired, Petrino served as interim head coach in 2025.

Saturday in Oxford is the first time Kiffin stands on the visiting sideline at Vaught Hemingway Stadium since leaving for Baton Rouge. The police already have their orders.
