A University College London study found that adults who experienced persistent financial hardship across their lives showed poorer cognitive performance and signs of accelerated brain aging later in life. The research drew on 2,759 U.K. participants from the MRC National Survey of Health and Development, all born in 1946. The accumulation of poverty is linked to cognitive decline, Wels said, and consistent results across multiple adversity measures and multiple cognitive outcomes made the findings solid.

Who carried the steepest associations

Associations were strongest among men, people with disadvantaged childhoods, and carriers of the APOE-ε4 genetic variant, which is linked to a higher risk of Alzheimer's disease.

Wels said the stronger male finding reflects the breadwinner role common among men in the 1946 cohort, and noted it may not appear in studies of younger generations.

The researchers proposed two possible mechanisms: chronic stress producing inflammation, and the cognitive load that accumulates from years of persistent financial worry. The observational design cannot prove causation.

The 1946 birth year shapes the findings. Participants' life experiences reflect a specific historical and social context, and even after accounting for many factors affecting brain health, unmeasured variables may have influenced the results, the authors acknowledged.

Reducing long-term poverty could help protect brain health, the UCL team said, though further studies are needed to determine whether improving financial circumstances directly reduces the risk of cognitive decline or dementia.
