Fastenal (FAST) gross margin declined to 44.7 percent in the twelve months ended June 2026, continuing a two-year slide that management attributes largely to its strategy of winning large key accounts. The company’s stock trades at 43.3 times earnings, a premium to the S&P 500’s 22.9 multiple, reflecting investor expectations for continued growth despite the pressure on profitability.

The margin contraction has been gradual but consistent. Fastenal retained 45.5 percent of sales as gross profit in the twelve months to June 2024, which fell to 45.1 percent a year later before dropping to the current 44.7 percent level. This recent decline occurred during the period of fastest revenue growth among the last three years, with sales rising 12.5 percent. Even with the slide, Fastenal’s margin remains well above the 39.4 percent reported by competitor W.W. Grainger for its latest twelve-month period.

Management quantified the impact of its key account strategy during its third-quarter 2026 earnings call on October 14, 2026. Executives estimated that expanding business with large customers cost approximately 50 basis points of margin in that quarter. While these large customers generally carry lower gross margins, executives stated that their higher volumes and more efficient service levels support attractive operating margins. Fastenal reported an operating margin of 21.5 percent in the third quarter, up 90 basis points year-over-year.

On gross margin specifically, management noted that favorable items added 40 basis points in the third quarter. Consequently, the underlying gross margin was approximately 60 basis points lower than a year earlier, a figure the chief financial officer described as a good underlying point to consider. The gap between prices and costs worked against the company by about 30 basis points in the third quarter, though management stated it is comfortable that this gap will not widen in the fourth quarter. Fastenal does not provide quarterly or annual guidance, so these underlying figures serve as pointers rather than formal forecasts.

Investors will await further clarity when Fastenal reports its fourth-quarter results, expected on or around January 19, 2027. The upcoming figures will be measured against a soft comparable period, as management indicated that about 50 basis points of negative timing affected gross margin in the fourth quarter of 2025. The key metric to watch will be fourth-quarter 2026 gross margin, which will be compared against the 44.3 percent reported a year earlier.
