A small team of women at the University of South Florida is engineering jewelry that reads a drop of a drink for benzodiazepines, the drug class most commonly linked to spiking incidents. Elora Armor, co-founded by 22-year-old graduate student Addison Bounds and Kira Robichaud, plans to sell bracelets, pendants, keychains and potentially phone cases fitted with an electromagnetic sensor tied to a smartphone app. Bounds told Fox 13 Tampa Bay that launch is targeted for January 2028, ahead of the L.A. Olympics.

How Elora Armor's sensor works

The process is quick. A single drop from a fingertip is enough liquid to trigger the sensor, Bounds said. The connected app then returns a notification confirming whether the drink is safe to consume. If the test flags a spiked drink, the app immediately shares the user's live location with a pre-selected safety network.

The sensor is designed to read benzodiazepines specifically, the substance class most frequently cited in spiking cases. Robichaud, who has a science background, is helping lead the technical development alongside Bounds and their all-women team.

The scale of the problem

National data on drink spiking in the United States remains sparse, partly because no federal tracking system exists. A 2017 study covering more than 6,000 college students at three universities found that 7.8% reported being drugged without their knowledge or consent. Among female students in that sample the figure reached roughly 10%; among males it was roughly 4%.

The Center for Violence Prevention and Self Defense Training has noted that common drink-spiking drugs are often hard to detect, and their effects can worsen when mixed with alcohol. Spiking incidents occur most often in crowded social settings. Symptoms after consuming a spiked drink can include rapid intoxication, sudden behavioral changes, memory lapses, loss of balance and blurred vision.
