Donovan Mitchell locks in $273 million Cavaliers extension with LeBron James decision pending

A four-year, $273 million maximum extension keeps Donovan Mitchell in Cleveland through at least the 2029-30 season. Signed on the first day of his eligibility this summer, the deal includes a full trade kicker and a player option for 2030-31. Mitchell, 29, passed on the chance to wait one more year for a potential five-year, $353 million contract.

Mitchell's standing in Cleveland

The extension cements Cleveland's core around one of the Eastern Conference's most productive scorers. Mitchell was entering 2026-27 on the final guaranteed year of his previous contract, with a 2027 player option waiting behind it. By signing on the first eligible day, he resolved any ambiguity well ahead of that window.

Mitchell has averaged 26.7 points across four seasons with the Cavaliers, stepping up to 27.9 last season. Seven consecutive All-Star selections span his career, three with the Utah Jazz before his 2022 trade to Cleveland. He has made the All-NBA team in three of his four Cavaliers seasons.

Mitchell cited "unfinished business" after Cleveland was swept by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference finals. The Knicks went on to win the NBA championship.

LeBron James and the roster math

Mitchell's commitment arrives as LeBron James, 41, the NBA's all-time leading scorer, prepares to leave the Los Angeles Lakers after eight seasons. James has said he will play elsewhere for 2026-27 and has not publicly indicated a destination. His agent, Rich Paul, is actively reviewing specific teams, with Cleveland among those in consideration. James won an NBA title with the Cavaliers in 2016 and grew up in Akron, Ohio.

The Philadelphia 76ers, Miami Heat, and Golden State Warriors have also appeared in published reports as candidates. Salary cap management sits at the center of every scenario. The Cavaliers are simultaneously in reported negotiations with James Harden, acquired before last season's trade deadline, on a team-friendly deal aimed at preserving flexibility.

Mitchell's extension is a maximum contract. Cleveland also has Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen in place, giving the roster secondary scoring and rim protection that could reduce the offensive burden on a 41-year-old if James arrives.
