Dan Dakich blasts A'ja Wilson over fan incident in playoff loss

Dan Dakich criticized Las Vegas Aces forward A'ja Wilson following her technical foul in the second game of the WNBA first-round series against the Indiana Fever. The Aces lost the game 99-89, forcing a decisive third matchup on Thursday night in Las Vegas.

During the fourth quarter, Wilson received a technical foul after an altercation with a spectator along the baseline. The incident began when Wilson became entangled with Indiana Fever forward Sophie Cunningham, prompting a fan to point at her from the baseline. Wilson left the court in response to the gesture, resulting in the foul call. The Indiana Fever confirmed that arena security reviewed the incident and determined the fan did not violate the WNBA Fan Code of Conduct. The spectator was not removed from Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

On his podcast "Don't @ Me," Dakich questioned Wilson's reaction, stating, "He went like that, and he took a step. Oh my God, the horror." He added that the increased attention on WNBA players is overwhelming, claiming, "The spotlight is too big for the sisters." Dakich also suggested that Caitlin Clark's presence contributes to the tension, stating, "Caitlin Clark has broken African American women... She got frustrated and the queen couldn't handle it."

Wilson addressed her actions during a postgame news conference, emphasizing her general avoidance of conflict. "I don't really get into that mess," Wilson said. She explained that while she tries to stay focused on her game, she finds it unacceptable when a man approaches her while walking after a foul, pointing his finger at her regardless of his tone or words.

Aces head coach Becky Hammon acknowledged she only witnessed the aftermath of the interaction. "I've never seen her react like that," Hammon said. "Whatever was done, she felt very disrespected in that moment... Whatever it was, it doesn't have any place in that arena." When asked about Wilson leaving the court, Hammon noted, "I guess you can't leave the court."

Earlier in the same game, two courtside fans voluntarily left the arena following a mid-game disruption with 4:38 remaining in the third quarter. Aces guards Jewell Loyd and Jackie Young gestured toward security regarding attendees in the front row. Security found no official violation of the Fan Code of Conduct for these individuals either.

The series moves to Las Vegas for Game 3 at 9 p.m. ET. Wilson recorded 22 points and nine rebounds in the loss, while Caitlin Clark finished with 27 points, 15 assists and seven rebounds for Indiana.
