His foot caught in the turf. The attempted clearance failed. Hans Vanaken put the loose ball into the empty net past Timothy Ream, who could not turn in time. Pulisic Exits; Balogun Contained

Christian Pulisic — carrying the "Captain America" designation throughout the tournament — was substituted off after attempting a shot and striking the back heel of a Belgian defender instead of the ball. He tried to continue before Pochettino sent on Sebastian Berhalter in his place. Folarin Balogun, reinstated after FIFA suspended his red card under Article 27 of its disciplinary code, never found a clean look. Belgium's defensive shape denied him the space he had exploited in earlier rounds.
