US-Canada trade deal back in focus as Trump cites agricultural tariffs as key condition

The US-Canada trade file is back in focus after President Donald Trump said a deal could be reached in the near future, expressing optimism following a period of heightened tensions between the two countries.

He attached one explicit condition: Canadian tariffs on American farmers, which he characterized as reaching up to 400%, have to move.

The remark follows an August collapse in negotiations, after which both countries added tariffs and trade restrictions that have since worked into cross-border supply chains.

The optimism out of Washington is real but comes without a timeline Trump has specified. No formal negotiating date has been set, and talks have not officially resumed.
