Permanent US military access to Greenland is now locked in, following a sweeping agreement among the United States, Denmark, and Greenland that carries no expiration date and is structured to survive even if Greenland eventually becomes an independent country.
The deal grants Washington unrestricted basing, access, and overflight rights across the strategically placed Arctic island, while barring China, Russia, and other non-NATO nations from establishing bases or stationing troops there.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking first to Fox News Digital, called it a deal that "permanently guarantees U.S. security interests in the Arctic at zero cost to the U.S.
taxpayer." The United States already operates Pituffik Space Base on the island and has held military access under a defense agreement dating to 1951. What shifts under the new arrangement is approval authority.
