Tim Cook hands off Apple to John Ternus with the AI bet still in the balance

John Ternus officially becomes Apple (AAPL) chief executive today, and the transition has put Cook's record under a lens that extends well past revenue charts.

The piece of that record most likely to define his reputation is Apple's choice to build its AI ambitions partly around external models rather than a frontier-model business of its own, with Google supplying some of the most important capabilities.

Whether that was the right call is still forming.
