Supply-crunch quarter splits Big Oil: XOM profit more than doubles but misses, CVX shares gain

A historic oil supply crunch delivered two very different prints from Big Oil's biggest names this period.

ExxonMobil (XOM) posted profit that more than doubled, yet that result still fell short of where the market had set the bar. Chevron (CVX) produced the cleaner number, and shares moved higher on the session.

ExxonMobil's print: big number, wrong number The math looked strong on its face. But in a supply squeeze of historic scale, the consensus had already priced in a higher ceiling, and ExxonMobil's number did not reach it.

That gap between the doubled result and the expected result is the setup worth examining, because it tells you how aggressively the street was positioned into the report. Shares did not get the same lift Chevron saw.
