New York City's $70 million commitment to five municipal grocery stores is the largest single dollar figure attached to the democratic-socialist push into local government so far.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration has allocated the funds toward stores that private firms will operate under city requirements, selling a basket of selected produce, meat, seafood, and pantry staples at prices the city says will run 30% below typical retail.
The discount applies to that defined basket, not every product on the shelves, and the first location is not expected to open until next year. The litigation is already active.
The Multicultural Business Coalition, which says it represents hundreds of small, immigrant- and minority-owned grocers, has filed two lawsuits seeking to block the program.
