New York's 1934-era alcohol licensing statutes are back in focus after the Business Council of New York State launched its "New Yorkers Cheers for Change" campaign Sunday, arguing the laws have constrained the state's hospitality and spirits industries since they were enacted.
The group's website says repealing those restrictions could generate more than 4,000 new jobs and $500 million in new economic activity statewide. The campaign targets two specific statutes.
New York's 200 Foot Law prohibits the State Liquor Authority from issuing licenses to businesses within 200 feet of a school or house of worship.
The 500 Foot Law restricts licensing to operators within 500 feet of three or more existing licensed establishments.
