After NATO's July summit in Ankara produced commitments for 900 Patriot missiles and more than $40 billion in counter-drone investment over five years, the alliance's top transformation commander told Fox News Digital those purchases do not solve the underlying problem.
Pierre Vandier, NATO's supreme allied commander for transformation, warned that Western air defenses are structurally mismatched to the threat scale now visible in Ukraine and the Middle East.
"Today, the math is not in favor of the West," Vandier said. The production wall Vandier's case rests on a specific industrial limit.
Patriot interceptors and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense systems are stretched by simultaneous demand from Ukraine and U.S.-Iran conflict scenarios, and cannot be replenished quickly enough to match the pace Russia has set.
