Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey is requesting $2 million to expand the Welcome Family program, which currently serves about 3,000 births annually.
The proposal aims to make postpartum nurse visits available for roughly 68,000 births statewide each year.
This expansion follows the Lindsay Clancy trial, where a jury deadlocked on whether the mother was criminally responsible for killing her three children, a case that highlighted gaps in maternal mental health support.
The program is designed to act as an entry point for families, with nurses assessing newborn health, screening for postpartum depression, and connecting parents to additional resources.
