A routine traffic stop on Interstate 65 in Warren County turned fatal Monday when Kentucky State Police Trooper Hayden Phillips was shot and killed, prompting a manhunt that concluded with the capture of suspect Emonnie Branch.
Phillips, 30, was a three-year veteran assigned to Post 3 in Bowling Green and is survived by his wife and three young sons.
Attorney Kyle Bumgarner described the incident at a Monday night news conference, stating that Phillips was "senselessly murdered." Bumgarner highlighted the personal toll of the loss, noting that Phillips' wife expected him to come home and that his three sons are now without a father.
