Japan producer prices ease to 7.2%, falling short of Reuters poll forecast

Japan's producer price index eased to 7.2% in the latest reading, falling short of the 7.4% median from economists polled by Reuters and stepping back from a revised 7.3% in June.

The miss was measured rather than dramatic, but an undershoot against a defined consensus number carries its own weight when a market is reading for direction rather than a single month's figure.

The print and what separates it from consensus Two-tenths of a percentage point is what sat between the actual reading and the Reuters poll median.

June's number was also revised, settling at 7.3% ahead of this release, which means the sequential move was a single decimal point down.
