A social media trend circulating under the name "ferritin face" has drawn attention from physicians, who say low ferritin levels can explain persistently dark under-eye circles in some patients.
The mechanism runs through hemoglobin: when ferritin falls short, the body struggles to produce the oxygen-carrying protein, skin loses its capillary color and thins, and the naturally darker tissue beneath the eyes becomes more visible.
Josef Hadeed, a double board-certified plastic surgeon at Hadeed Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills, California, describes ferritin as the body's "iron storage vault" and notes that low iron compromises skin elasticity, making tissue appear thinner and less resilient.
