Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince says automated traffic has overtaken human usage on the internet, a shift he argues requires a new payment model for content access.
Prince, speaking in an interview with The Verge, stated that while the company predicted in the second half of 2027 that automated traffic would surpass human traffic, the threshold was actually crossed in May of this year.
He noted that the crossover date had been moved up from a previous estimate of the first half of 2027, reflecting rapid growth in AI agent activity.
Cloudflare, which Prince says operates in over 350 cities and sits in front of more than 20 percent of the web, positions itself as a mediator between website owners and AI bots.
