Alphabet's $77.1 billion unrealized investment gain inflated the Q2 2026 earnings print, GOOG slipped 2.2%

A $77.1 billion unrealized gain on equity holdings pushed Alphabet's (NASDAQ: GOOG) second-quarter 2026 "other income and expenses" line to nearly $98 billion from roughly $2.7 billion in the same period a year earlier, producing an earnings beat that the tape quickly discounted.

Shares fell 2.2% on the session. The next number in focus is the sequential OI&E figure when Q3 results arrive.

What the numbers actually show Alphabet reported Q2 2026 net income of $41 billion, a figure that is less than half the $98 billion in "other" income on the same income statement.

The relationship ran in the opposite direction a year ago: Q2 2025 net income of just over $31 billion dwarfed the period's roughly $2.7 billion in other income and expenses, or OI&E.
