Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta is in focus after an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 migrants crossed from Morocco over several days, leaving at least 72 people dead and prompting the U.S.
State Department to raise its travel advisory for the territory to Level 3: Reconsider Travel. Deaths resulted from drowning during the sea crossing and a stampede near a breakwater barrier.
Spanish search teams were still working through the weekend looking for additional victims in the waters off the enclave, which has a resident population of roughly 84,000.
The crossing and the toll The wave temporarily increased Ceuta's population by more than half. By Sunday, many migrants had returned to Morocco, though others remained in the city or were evading authorities.
